Public Relations
What do you expect of a career in public relations management?
Technology has changed the way we communicate. One can almost practice public relations by simply owning a state-of-the-art cell phone or the latest laptop. But that, unfortunately, is not enough. In a way, public relations is much like multi-tasking: as the link between an organisation and its publics, you will have to perform a wide range of tasks under high pressure while demonstrating the skill of prioritising.
When confronted with a huge problem such as the oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, you must advise top management to confront the problem openly and honestly – and help them solve it. You have a responsibility towards both the organisation as well as its publics. It all comes down to communication: planning, implementing and evaluating the effectiveness thereof.
Excellent writing skills are required as well as an awareness of global trends and issues. Public relations is a dynamic careerand if you have problem analysis and conflict resolution skills as well, you are bound to succeed.
Public Relations is different from marketing and advertising because it does not invlve selling a product. Rather - it sells the 'image' of the organisation. Many big companies employ their own public relations staff, but smaller companies tend to outsource this funtion to companies that specialise in Public Relations
