Anthropology

Anthropology is the scientific study of the origin, the behavior, and the physical, social, and cultural development of humans.

Social-cultural anthropology looks at the various ways in which learned techniques, values, and beliefs are transmitted from one generation to the next and acted upon in different situations.

Social-cultural anthropologists use their training and skills to to work on important issues such as:

• economic development in third world countries
• public policies affecting ethnic minorities
• changes arising from contact between different societies (especially Western and non-Western ones)

The information that comes from these kinds of studies (sometimes called applied anthropology) plays an important role in finding solutions to situations where there are conflicting social values or expectations.
