Teaching
Teaching is one of the most important professions in our society. Teachers are the people responsible for inspiring and educating our present and future leaders. Recent international research shows that educators make more difference in student achievement than any other single school factor!
Teaching is a career that requires dedication and a love of sharing information. To be a really effective teacher you will need to know your subject, and be able to organise lessons so that you are able to help all types of learners to achieve their best academically. Although it is hard work - teaching can be a very rewarding and fulfilling career.
Various teaching-oriented career opportunities can be found in the three broad bands of education provided by the South Africa's National Qualifications Framework (NQF):
Careers in General Education and Training
- Early Childhood Development (ECD) Practitioners or Trainers (including pre-primary, kindergarten and pre-school teachers)
- Professional Teachers:
- Foundation Phase (Grade R to 3)
- Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 to 6)
- Senior Phase (Grade 7 to 9)
- Teaching Assistant
- Adult Basic Education and Training Practitioner or Trainer
- Education Officer (Environmental, Science Centre and Museum programs)
Careers in Further Education and Training (FET)
- Professional Teacher: Further Education (Grade 10 to 12)
- Lecturer: FET College
- Trainer or Training Officer in commerce and industry
- Education Officer (Environmental, Science Centre and Museum programs)
Careers in Higher Education and Training
- Lecturer: University of Technology
- Lecturer: University
- Trainer or Training Officer in commerce and industry
There are two ways to qualify as a professional teacher:
- Complete a three year bachelor’s degree (which contains subjects recognised for entry into a post graduate teaching qualification) followed by in a one year post-graduate qualification and then registration with the South African Council of Educators (SACE).
- Complete a four year undergraduate Bachelor of Education degree followed by registration with the South African Council of Educators (SACE).
All Professional Teachers and ECD Practitioners must be registered with the South African Council of Educators (SACE).
