Access to training:
Candidates interested in pursuing any of the registered hospitality qualifications should have a FETC certificate or equivalent obtained at level 4. (The existing Matric/Grade 12 certificate meets these requirements)
However, to pursue a National Certificate (NC) in Cookery, Fast Food Services or Accommodation Services entry level requirements are much lower. Contact THETA to determine if you qualify!
Work Environment
A career in hospitality offers great variety in your day-to-day work and due to it’s 24-hour operational nature, it can be expected that you will need to be flexible, prepared to work long hours, shifts, weekends and even Public Holidays.

Professional Cookery :
Chefs and cooks are key figures in this industry. They ensure unity between the menu, type of operation being run, do menu planning and development, and often all food costing, ordering and stock control. They are also in charge of all the people working in the kitchen (called the kitchen brigade).
Cookery is a growing profession in South Africa, and there is great scope for travel to foreign countries to gain further experience. South African chefs are highly regarded by the international chefs' fraternity, and attend and win prizes regularly at international cookery competitions.

Listed Qualifications:
You can prepare for your career in hospitality by pursuing a variety of different qualifications. Higher Education or academic qualifications – incl. degrees and national diplomas - can be pursued at universities or Technikons. Vocational or career-orientated qualifications that combine both theoretical and practical components are offered by way of certificates, learnerships and skills programs.
