Construction is one of our country's most important industries. There is a strong need for bright, talented people to fill the jobs at architecture and engineering firms and construction companies.
Jean Kevane of Hire Resolve believes that the future is bright for engineers and specialists in the built environment. ‘Right now,’ he says, ‘The main focus is on construction, whether it be commmercial, civil, residential or industrial, but there are also other sectors where demand will only get stronger.
Once seen as a white, male-dominated sector, female and black engineers are now far more common, but there is still a marked scarcity and these professionals are highly sought after, particularly those with any industry experience within the engineering industry.
Pro's of Engineering Careers:
- Engineers will always be in demand, especially those who have specialised in a particular field, so finding employment shouldn’t be a problem for qualified candidates.
- ‘As the most developed and industrial country on the continent, South Africa’s engineering industry sets the standard in terms of expertise and capability on the continent,’ says Kevane.
- ‘There is a particular demand for engineers in the Middle East right now and South African engineers are targeted, alongside their European and North American counterparts, for their ability to produce excellent work.’ In other words, qualified South African engineers are able to find work internationally.
Cons of Engineering Careers:
- While having the right qualification is key, in the engineering sector experience is king, so starting salaries are fairly low while senior engineers are remunerated for more attractively. Be prepared to work hard, even if it’s for less money than you’d like in the beginning, and try to get as much vacation work as possible before you graduate.
- While graduates working in the IT or media industries might change jobs every few months, Kevane notes that engineers that jump from one company to the next tend to be regarded with suspicion by potential employers.
- Engineering can be a very rewarding career choice, but is also often deadline-driven and thus very stressful.
