Career Planet: Marine Engineering Career Focus day.
Career Planet recently invited Grade 11 learners with maths and science as subjects, and an interest in engineering, to apply for places on the career day tour. The successful candidates were: Moses Kato Vava, Nerolin Naidoo, Devon van der Helde, Azeez Davids and Reatlehile Jankie from Bloubergstrand High, Razia Banderker, Aashikah Abdullah, Irfaan Parker and Ahmed Arif from Cravenby Secondary and Raoul Ozudogru from Fairmont High.
The day was hosted by CPUT's Maritime Studies department, and began with a welcome by campus head, and maritime expert, Professor Ed Snyders. This was followed a presentation on maritime careers by Mr Douglas Dyers and a tour of the campuses impressive training facilities.
The highlight of the day was a sailing trip on the Maritime Studies training vessel, Fathom 10, in Granger Bay. The weather conditions were perfect and we were treated to a spectacular view of the Cape Town coastline with the Green Point Stadium in the background.
The learners had an opportunity to visit the bridge on the vessel to talk to the captain, and were also invited by the chief engineer to see the vessel's engines.
The day ended with a meal at the Maritime Studies canteen.
Our sincere thanks go to the staff at the CPUT Maritime Studies and Survival Centre who made this a memorable day for all of us.
Career Planet: Maritime Engineering Focus day: Ten learners from the Western Cape recently had first-hand experience of Maritime Engineering at CPUT's Platinum Campus in Granger Bay.
