29 January 2012: A significantly larger Fasset Development Project funding pot

Fasset’s Exco recently approved R59.4 million in funding for Development Projects, bringing the amount allocated to Development Projects to just over R409.4 million.

These projects will enable Fasset to increase its rural footprint, in areas such as the Free State, East London, Port Elizabeth and the Western Cape,” says Fasset CEO, Cheryl James.

Three projects are re-runs:

• the Bonani 7 Work Readiness Project delivered by Guarantee Trust Corporate Support Services (GTCSS)
• Thusanani 6, delivered by Stan Hutcheson & Associates
• SciMathus Bridging Programme, offered by the Institute of Mathematics and Science Teaching at the University of Stellenbosch.

Fasset has agreed to fund the following programmes:

1. 500 learners on the Bonani Work Readiness Programme, bringing the total number of learners funded to 3 630. There is a January 2012 and a July 2012 intake. 250 learners will be recruited nationally, for each programme.

 The six-month Bonani Work Readiness Programme targets unemployed black finance graduates with B Com degrees or National Diplomas. Learners are equipped with workplace skills and are then placed on either SAIPA or SAICA learnerships.   

With the establishment of academies in the Free State and in East London, GTCSS now offers the programme in five provinces.

2. 200 learners on the Thusanani Work Readiness Programme, bringing the total number of learners funded by Fasset to 1 220. Offered by Stanley Hutcheson & Associates in partnership with the University of Johannesburg and Deloitte, the twelve-week programme targets unemployed, non-accounting graduates. Candidates are recruited according to scarce skills in the Fasset sector.

Unemployed graduates receive training in areas such as communication, problem solving, presentation skills, team work, and conflict management. They also learn how to write a CV and a covering letter, which stands out, and how to present themselves in a job interview. There are two intakes:

March and July.

Although learners will be recruited nationally, training will only be offered in Gauteng.

3.  2 groups of 25 learners on the SciMathus Bridging Programme. The ten-month bridging programme assists African, Coloured and Indian learners to improve their marks in Science, Mathematics and Accountancy, so as to gain admission to higher education in Economic and Management Sciences. Learners study accounting at first-year university level, and they also have an opportunity to rewrite Grade 12 Mathematics on the Higher Grade.

             Learners are recruited directly from schools in the catchment area and nationally.

4.  120 B Com and B Compt graduates on a 4-month programme, which will be delivered by Boston City Campus and Business College. Candidates will be placed on a four-month of work readiness programme, before being placed on SAIPA or SAICA learnerships.

“Candidates will receive soft skills, life skills and pre-employment readiness training. They will also receive computer skills training over a one month period; training in accounting and book keeping using a simulator for one month; and they will also spend one month completing an auditing case study.  

Boston will recruit nationally. Training will, however, only be offered at Boston campuses in Gauteng.

5. 50 B Com graduates for a one-year programme, which culminates in the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Advanced Certificate in Accounting. The programme will be delivered by Madiba Bay Accountancy Training, Port Elizabeth, at its Madiba Bay campus.

6. 96 B Com graduates on a one-year programme, which will culminate in a postgraduate Certificate for Business Analysts. The programme includes a work-readiness component, and will be delivered by Rhodes University in a consortium with Deloitte.

            The programme will be offered in KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Gauteng. Twenty-four learners will be recruited from each province.

7. 120 post matriculants on the seven-month Ithemba Programme, which will be managed by the S&T School of Accounting Technicians. The programme targets unemployed Grade 12s, with Accounting. Candidates will also complete the AAT Advanced Certificate in Accounting.

The programme includes English language development skills; maths literacy skills; work readiness skills; life skills; and MS Office user skills. “20 places have been reserved for learners with disabilities. Learners will be recruited from the Philidelphia School for Learners with Disabilities,” James informs.

“Development Projects remain a very important mechanism for enabling Fasset to achieve NSDS objectives, fast track transformation within its sector, and enable Fasset to increase its footprint in rural areas. Over the past eleven years, more than 13 000 learners have benefited from Fasset-funded Development Projects. Beneficiaries are in line with National Skills Development Strategy (NSDS) targets of 85% Black, 54% women and 4% disabled,” James concludes.
