Jen asks: I’m thinking quite seriously about becoming a nursery school teacher. I currently have a BA in Child and Family Psychology (completed 2006), I did 2 years of education during this degree. I also have an honors degree in psychology. I saw on your website that I would need an approved general bachelors degree plus a one year professional teaching qualification. Is my degree an approved one? If so, please send me more info about the 1 year of additional training I would need to do. |
|
Dear Jen Well done on giving serious thought to becoming a teacher.
The one year course you may be referring to is the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (1 year). The subjects they look for are at least 2 teachable subjects as well as 2 official languages included in your degree. You will have to contact a University or University of Technology directly to find out if the subjects you have qualify you for this certificate. They will also be able to provide you with information regarding the course content (teaching in a school will also form part of your course requirements).
For example, we suggest you explore the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Foundation phase and early childhood development) offered by Unisa which is a distance learning institution : http://brochure.unisa.ac.za/brochure/showprev.aspx?d=progs&f=p_02631

Hoppies asks: Seun wil vir n laerskool onderwyser leer. Inligting oor studies, plekke, beurse en verblyf |
|
Dear Hoppie Thank you for your question. Congratulations on your son wanting to be a teacher; it is a wonderfully worthwhile and rewarding profession.
For primary school education your son has two routes he needs to explore:
· Complete a degree (for example, BA, BSc, BCom) with teaching subjects (English, Afrikaans, history, geography, biology, physical science, mathematics, psychology, economics, accounting, drama, music, fine art, etc) followed by a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) for either general education (foundation, intermediate and senior phase). Please contact universities who offer the PGCE to determine what first degree subjects are required.
We suggest you contact the University, University of Technology or Private College directly for information regarding admissions, student residence and course content at each institution. For example, the University of Stellenbosch ( http://www.sun.ac.za/index.asp), the Cape Peninsular University of Technology (http://www.cput.ac.za/).
To find other higher institutions we suggest you access our Career Planet webpage: http://www.careerplanet.co.za/uploads/files/4b4a12c079ed8.pdf
For bursaries we suggest you contact the Financial Aid Office of the university or university of technology where your son plan to study for information on the bursaries and loans he may be eligible to apply for. They will also be able to tell you if he is eligible to apply for a loan from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (www.nsfas.org.za). While the NSFAS does not handle individual applications for funding at their offices, contact their Call Centre on 021 763 3232 for more information on Financial Aid Offices where you plan to study.Specifically look at the Funza Lushaka Teaching Bursaries at http://www.nsfas.org.za/web/view/funding/fundingoptions/funza.
To see the list of bursaries on our Career Planet website (http://www.careerplanet.co.za/_pages/bursaries). Please make sure you meet application deadline dates. The dates given are the date that the bursary scheme should receive the application, so post your application forms at least a week in advance of the due date.
We wish your son all the best in his studies. We would also like to keep in contact to see how your son is progressing. However, if you do not want us to contact you please let us know. The Career Planet Team
