Dear Ingrid Thank you for your question. We strongly suggest you first contact the Western CapeDepartment of Education (WCED) for details and advice: Tel : (021) 467 2535 ; Toll free 0800 454 647. The following WCED web page also contains some useful information: http://curriculum.wcape.school.za/site/22/page/view/72.
We have also been advised that most WCED schools have all the necessary forms and information about how to go about registering as a private candidate.
You could also contact private colleges like Damelin, Brainline Learning World, Abbots College, Progress College or Intec College to see if they can help you with private candidate registration and suitable courses:
Another avenue to explore are the courses offered by public further education and training colleges; for example the new three year National Certificate (Vocational) courses provide many practical opportunities. Please refer to the telephone and address list of Public FET Colleges on the Department of Education’s website to locate the college nearest to you: http://www.education.gov.za/dynamic/dynamic.aspx?pageid=326&dirid=83
We hope this helps you to find a workable solution. Please let us know of your progress. The Career Planet Team

Carmilla asks: I have passed 3 subjects last year. I wrote English hg, business economics hg, economics hg, this year I have applied for Afrikaans hg, mercantile law sg and accounting hg. I have not written accounting, if I pass 5 subjects .3 on hg, 2 on sg will. I receive a certificate on combining the two separate statements of symbols without a sixth subject entry, can I apply for a seta learnership or do I have to register for a sixth subject next year? I need a mscore of 720 to pass grade 12, I’m really confused. |

Dear Carmilla In order to earn a Senior Certificate (S) you need to have written 6 subjects, passed at least 5 subjects and obtained at least a 720 aggregate. We understand you can still write your 6th subject (by may/june 2011)as a private candidate. However, if you were aiming for a matric exemption you have not complied with the requirements. We also suggest you contact your local education department for clarity on how to apply for a senior certificate:

· Free State Tel: (051) 404 8430
· Gauteng : (011) 355 1510/8

· Western Cape Tel : (021) 467 2535 Toll free 0800 454 647
