Teboho asks: Please advice on the options I have careerwise. My background is in the sciences (Applied Maths/Physics/Maths) which I have not completed; been employed in insurance industry; currently I am in a finance department doing billing. I am interested in Risk Management, however from where I am(financial accounting) it seems it is not possible or it would be a stretch. Please advise on the path I can take in view of where i am at to where I want to head to. |

Dear Teboho: Thank you for your email. We suggest you consider the courses offered by Unisa (www.unisa.ac.za) and Intec College as these are distance learning institutions which will enable you to continue working while studying at your own pace. We suggest you start off by exploring the UNISA economic and management science calendar for suitable courses: http://www.unisa.ac.za/contents/faculties/ems/docs/calender_2010_e.pdf; for example
Also consider the (1 year) Risk Management course offered by Intec College: http://www.intec.edu.za/content/coursepdf/15225B.pdf
We also suggest you explore job adverts for risk management positions to see what sort of qualifications and experience they require. We would like to keep in contact with you to see how you are progressing; however, if you prefer that we do not contact you please let us know. The Career Planet Team

Johann asks: I have complete a science degree at the University of Stellenbosch back in 1997, but have since chosen a career path in Risk Management which has been most rewarding.
I have recently completed a Risk Management Programme through UNISA and have since felt the urge to further my studies in the field of commerce.
I would like to do a conversion course from my B.Science degree to a specialized B.Commerce degree, but have no idea how to go about in achieving this.
Can you perhaps suggest any institutions that might offer such a conversion course (it could be distance learning or lecture-based)?

Dear Johann: Thank you for your email. It is our understanding that Risk Management requires a thorough understanding of mathematics, statistics and probabilities. We suggest you explore the Actuarial Science qualifications offered by the commerce faculties of higher education institutions for suitability. Contact the postgraduate section of the Commerce Faculties of UNISA, Stellenbosch and the University of Cape Town to see if there is a conversion course you could do. For example, UCT offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Management (Actuarial Conversion Course). You could also contact the Actuarial Society of South Africa (www.actuarialsociety.co.za) for further information and suggestions.
We wish you all the best as you pursue your career goals. We would also like to keep in contact with you to see how you are progressing; however, if you prefer that we do not contact you please let us know. The Career Planet Team
