Devon asks: I have recently completed my Fitting and Turning Trade test and have in the past completed my MERSETA accredited Diploma in HVAC+R. I am now thinking of Furthering my education by thinking of studying Mechanical Engineering. I have been in the Manufacturing and Maintenance field for 7 years and was wondering if my experience and education would be accredited to me as RPL and only need to start on NQF3 or NQF4 Mechanical Eng. instead of starting right at the beginning? If you have some feed back for me regarding this I’d appreciate it! |

Dear Devon: Thank you for your email. When you apply for RPL they look at whether the experience you have gained is relevant to the course you are applying to. This process takes about 3 months; we suggest you contact the institution where you wish to study within good time. You may want to explore the RPL process on the Unisa website to give you some idea of what this process is about: https://my.unisa.ac.za/portal/. We also suggest you contact your local FET College to see what they can offer you through the RPL process. Also talk to the MERSETA to see what they suggest(www.merseta.org.za).
We wish you all the best as you pursue your career goals. We would also like to keep in contact with you to see how you are progressing; however, if you prefer that we do not contact you please let us know.
