A Villierdorp girl Asks: I am doing grade 12 this year. I would like to ask you if I am going to be able to do a course in accountancy, I’m doing maths literacy and not pure maths. I passed my maths literacy with 77% last year |
|
Dear Villierdorp girl You may be able to study accountancy at a University of Technology. Look at the Cape Peninsular University of Technology‘s National Diploma in Accounting or Cost and Management Accounting or Internal Auditing. They require mathematical literacy at level 5 (or 60%) and Accounting level 5 (or 60%). We hope this will help you find a suitable career in accounting. Best wishes from The Career Planet Team |

Adrienne Asks: I am a grade11 learner and I am doing maths. My marks are really bad this term and I am considering changing to maths literacy. Is this a good choice? Also i want to do something in the commerce field and I am not sure if I will get accepted at university if I do maths literacy. |
|
Dear Adrienne Thank you for your question regarding maths literacy. If your mathematics marks are bad changing to mathematical literacy is only one of a number of options you need to consider. Explore the possibility of extra mathematics classes or attending a maths programme like Master Maths (http://www.mastermaths.co.za/). Once you have caught up with the work you are not sure of, you will need to spend time every day working on your maths in a practical way, not just reading over the work. Doing a large number of old examination papers really helps, especially if you get someone to mark them and help you with the problems you battle with. Ask your mathematics teacher where to get hold of old exam papers. When choosing between Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy it is important to keep in mind that they are two different subjects developed for very different reasons.
Whether or not you need mathematics for a commercial degree depends on what the type of degree and which university you want to study through therefore it is very important to consult the admission requirements for the universities you are considering studying at:

We hope this information will help you to make your choice between mathematics and mathematical literacy. All the best for your future career. The Career Planet Team |

Crezelle asks: I wrote matric with maths literacy and obtained 91%, however having this option limits my career options. I want to enroll for a course that will offer my a chance to take maths and write a matric exam in it. I want this for the sole reason I want to study architecture at tuks and need atleast 50% for maths. |
|
Dear Crezell Thank you for you enquiry. It is good to see that you are being active in pursuing your desire to study architecture and not allowing a subject choice to get in your way. Theredo seem to be a few options you can explore:
Consider enrolling for a 4 year BTech Architectural Technology at Tswane University of Technology (require mathematical literacy or mathematics) then apply for admission to the Bachelor (Honours) Architecture degree at TUKS. Please note you may be required to complete a few bridging courses. We suggest you contact the University of Pretoria to explore this process.
We wish you all the best as you begin to explore your options. We would also like to stay in contact with you to see how you are progressing. However, if you do not want us to contact you please let us know. The Career Planet Team

Lee asks: Having been advised to downgrade to maths lit I have only just become aware that I will not qualify for university. What are my options as I am in grade 12 doing well and obtaining over 75% in maths lit. |
|
Dear Lee Well done on achieving such a good percentage in Mathematics Literacy. If you are going to be writing a NSC endorsed for a degree you will be able to study for a Bachelors degree at a University. The minimum admission requirements for admission to a Bachelor’s degree is the language of learning and teaching of required institution (L.O.I.T.) example English and 4 designated subjects (the designated makes you eligible for degree study). Each University will have set institutional requirements above the minimum entry requirements for degree studies.
Maths Literacy is accepted for admission to most BA and BSocSci qualifications in Law, Education and the Humanities. So as long as you meet the NSC requirements for a B degree endorsement, it really depends on what university qualification you want to obtain.
However, mathematics is compulsory for most university programmes in Health Science, Engineering and the Built Environment, Science and Commerce.
You could also explore the many qualifications offered by Universities of Technology: for example, most 3 year National Diplomas lead to a 1 year BTech degree. For example, the following web page contains the admission requirements for all the programmes offered at Cape Peninsula University of Technology:
We wish you all the best in your studies. We would also like to stay in contact with you to see how you are progressing. If however, you do not want us to contact you please let us know.

Tonick asks: My sister and cousin are currently in matric and are not sure on what to do because they are doing maths literacy. I was woundering if you could give them some advice on what to do and if possible some of the bursaries they could get. |
|
Dear Tonick Thank you for your question. It is nice so see that you are looking out for your sister and cousin.
Mathematical Literacy will allow them to access a large number of courses. They should explore the following list for suitability. Many courses require other subjects for admission purposes so they have to be sure to look up the admission requirements:
· Most university BA degree programs and BSc Physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language pathology.
· Most university of technology programs in Applied Sciences, Business, Social Sciences (Education), most Health and Wellness Sciences (not biomedical technology and radiography), Informatics and Design.
If they are struggling to make a career choice we suggest they contact a psychologist, career counsellor or psychometrist for a career development assessment. This sort of assessment will help them get to know themselves better and will help them to link their self knowledge to potential careers which they can explore. We also suggest they explore the UNISA career website for useful exercises which will help them explore their interests, personality and values (http://www.unisa.ac.za). Specifically look at the following web page:
If they will be needing financial assistance we suggest they contact the Financial Aid Office of the university or university of technology where they plan to study for information on the bursaries and loans they may be eligible to apply for. They will also be able to tell them if they are eligible to apply for a loan from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (www.nsfas.org.za). While the NSFAS does not handle individual applications for funding at their offices, contact their Call Centre on 021 763 3232 for more information on Financial Aid Offices where you plan to study.
If they know what they want to study they can visit the Career Planet bursary page http://www.careerplanet.co.za/_pages/bursaries and apply for suitable bursaries. Please make sure you meet application deadline dates. The dates given are the date that the bursary scheme should receive the application, so post your application forms at least a week in advance of the due date.
We hope your sister and cousin will find suitable options as they use the above suggestions. We wish you all the best for your future.
We would also like to stay in contact with you to see you (as well as your sister and cousin) are progressing. However, if you do not want us to contact you please let us know.
