Dear Letitia Thank you for your question and well done for thinking ahead to the next step in your career development plan. Fezile Asks: Please help me. I would like to become an accountant (auditor), but I have been discouraged by people and friends as I did not do maths in high school, only accounting. I was wondering if I can make this dream a reality – by getting either a bridge course – or choose an alternative career with an option of maths / accounting as additional subjects. Please help me – I am extremely passionate in numbers, and been told I am good at working with them. I am at present working as a Pastel Administrator (deal with journals) most of the time. Please tell me more about other exciting careers that I can do (with finance). I am over 23 years. |

Dear Fezile Unfortunately, mathematics is required for a BCom degree; which is the first step in the journey to becoming an accountant. However, if you are prepared to look at different career paths in accounting you may find something you’d enjoy. You are also working, which in today’s economic climate is wonderful – especially with such a prestigious firm. Well done! Hang on to that job! So taking into account your situation, have you through about looking at distance learning through UNISA. This will allow you to continue to work at your current job, which provides your with excellent work experience, while you study in the evenings and over part of your weekend. Start by looking at the different admission options you have; in particular look at the National Diploma admission requirements: Some of the courses you may consider include (http://brochure.unisa.ac.za/brochure/showlist.aspx?d=l_3_23):
Also explore the UNISA web page that discussed all the many career paths in accountancy: http://www.unisa.ac.za/default.asp?Cmd=ViewContent&ContentID=20344 Once you have completed a National Diploma you may apply for membership of the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (http://www.unisa.ac.za/Default.asp?Cmd=ViewContent&ContentID=20355). After a National Diploma consider completing a BTech degree in taxation or internal auditing and then register with the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (http://www.unisa.ac.za/Default.asp?Cmd=ViewContent&ContentID=20351) We hope this information will help you to continue your career in accounting.
