A social worker is required to obtain a BSocSci degree or equivalent, which enables professional registration with the South African Council for Social Service Profession - http://www.sacssp.co.za/.
No specific subjects are required or recommended for entry into a BSocSci degree. However, most universities require a minimum of at least a 4 (50 -
59%) in four subjects drawn from the list of subjects designated for university admission. They are: Accounting, Agricultural Sciences, Business Studies, Consumer Studies, Dramatic Arts, Economics, Engineering Graphics and Design, Geography, History, Information Technology, Languages (one language of learning and teaching at a higher education institution and two other recognised language subjects), Life Sciences, Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Music, Physical Sciences, Religion Studies and Visual Arts.
Each university has it's own admission requirements and point system, so it is important to attain the requirements for the universities being considered for study. Explore the examples given below:
Please note that if there is a possibility of your daughter wanting to complete a BA with Psychology as a major, it is important that she takes Mathematics as most universities require at least one year of statistics in their psychology oriented degrees.
Please explore the website for the South African Council for Social Service Profession http://www.sacssp.co.za/ for information about qualifications and professional registration.
