« Back | Home » Ask Lynn. Qualification comparison
Dear Kabelo
Thank you for your three questions. Firstly, as you said in your email ”a career can be rewarding if you have the right qualification and experience.” However, the motivation to gain the qualification and experience comes from a strong interest in the activities you perform. It is important to remember that a career is far more than the money you get paid to do a job. Only you can decide what you want from a career – satisfaction from doing something you enjoy really well or is the money you get from doing a job – any job.
Secondly, you ask about the comparative weight of a BTech, BSc and BSc (Eng). It is really difficult to assign weights to them because they are so different. A BSc Engineering degree is for people who enjoy applying science and technology to solving problems in industrial and manufacturing processes, plants and factories. Whereas the BSc and BTech degrees provide opportunities for people to access the world of science problem solving through research, quite often in a laboratory where they apply their scientific knowledge to new product development, quality control and solving quality control challenges.
Thirdly, to find the NQF Level descriptors open the saqa web page : http://www.saqa.org.za/ then select "focus areas" and then “level descriptors.” Honours degrees are pegged at level 7 while B degrees are at level 6.
