Dear Candace
Thank you for your question regarding social work bursaries. Congratulations on your wonderful outlook. Your positive attitude is sure to inspire others! You have turned a challenging life situation into a learning and career opportunity – well done!
Funding your studies requires you to explore a number of financial aid sources and apply for bursaries, scholarships and loans:
Start your search with a visit to the Career Planet bursary page (Healthcare and Social Services) http://www.careerplanet.co.za/_pages/bursaries Please make sure you meet application deadline dates. The dates given are the date that the bursary scheme should receive the application, so post your application forms at least a week in advance of the due date.
Also contact the Financial Aid Office at the universities you would like to attend, for information and assistance. They generally provide information about funding sources, expected costs and strategies for balancing your study budget. Ask about Merit Awards, Achievement Scholarships, Bursaries, Scholarships and Loans from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.
For example, if you are achieving an 80% aggregate or above, you may qualify for an Achievement Scholarship or Merit Award from some universities. This award recognizes academic excellence by paying a portion of a good student’s course fees. So it really is worth working hard with this goal in mind.
It is also imperative you explore the Financial Aid web pages of the western cape universities and if possible make an appointment to go to see them as soon as possible:
We hope this information will assist you to gain access to the academic qualifications you require for a career in social work.
All the best for your future career.
