« Back | Home » Ask Lynn. Boilermaker Course
Dear Kgadi
The course you will need to study if you want to become a boilermaker is a National Certificate (Vocational) or NCV Engineering and Related Design (3 years) with Engineering Fabrication as one of your subjects. This is offered by a Further Education and Training (FET) College. The course has theoretical and practical components. After qualifying you may apply to work for an engineering company, or industrial organization. After gaining appropriate engineering fabrication/boilermaking work experience you can apply to write the boilermaker Trade Test.
For further information on how to apply for the trade test once you have completed your NCV contact the MERSETA (http://www.merseta.org.za/) or the Institute for the National Development of Learnerships Employment Skills and Labour Assessments: Tel: (011) 206 1000; Postal Address: Private Bag X5, Olifantsfontein, 1665.
Make use of the following Department of Education webpage to identify your closest FET College: (http://www.education.gov.za/dynamic/dynamic.aspx?pageid=325&bid=7&branch=Further%20Education%20and%20Training).
You may also use the Department of Education website to identify Private FET Colleges near you (http://www.education.gov.za/dynamic/dynamic.aspx?pageid=421&tabfield=index_id&tabval=27). Contact them to see if they have any suitable boilermaking courses.
Best wishes for your future career in engineering.
