Dear Hardus
Thank you for your question regarding how to get mathematics HG so you can apply to study a BCom degree. We were all young once. Instead of giving up at this hurdle, you are working on your career development plan and that is such a positive move; well done! There is also some good news. We have explored the UNISA website and there seems to be a number of access options for you to explore which don’t require you to redo matric higher grade mathematics.
According to the UNISA website there is an “access process to degree studies for students without exemption” and I quote: “Degree studies are no longer exclusively accessible to people with matriculation exemption. Students without exemption but who have a senior or equivalent certificate and successfully complete certain certificate programmes can then apply for a Senate Discretionary Exemption Certificate. This makes them eligible to register for degree studies.” It also says “Certain of the short learning programmes can serve as a bridging course that will not only provide Senate Discretionary Exemption, but also exemption for two of the compulsory modules in the curricula of the 18 career-oriented BCom degrees, as well in the curricula for the BCompt, BBanking, BAdmin and BBA degrees” Please refer to the following webpage for further information. http://brochure.unisa.ac.za/brochure/showprev.aspx?d=s_7545&f=s_7546
You could also consider applying to complete a national diploma through UNISA; consult the general entry requirements on the following webpage: http://www.unisa.ac.za/Default.asp?Cmd=ViewContent&ContentID=21999 Once you have obtained a national diploma you may go on to complete a BTech degree or re-apply for a BCom.
Also, once you are 23 years of age you may be able to apply for registration to complete a degree without an exemption: http://www.unisa.ac.za/Default.asp?Cmd=ViewContent&ContentID=21999
We hope this information will help you to start your studies soon. All the best for your future career.
