Physical Science is required for architecture studies by some universities (University of Pretoria) and not by others (University of Cape Town; recommended as a subject) - so we suggest your son needs to explore the entry requirements for the university he wants to attend. Please refer to the list of approved universities on the  SA Council for the Architectural Profession website : http://www.sacapsa.com/:

• University of Cape Town (UCT):  www.uct.ac.za
• University of Johannesburg (UJ) :  www.uj.ac.za
• University of Free State (UFS):  www.uovs.ac.za
• Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU): www.nmmu.ac.za

Your son will also need to produce a portfolio of creative work, so it is essential that he looks at the universities who offer architecture to see what he needs to prepare for his portfolio. 

He may also consider a National Diploma in Architectural Technology which does not required Physical Science, however he will then be able to register as an architectural technician. Please be very careful about changing subjects  as he may no longer be eligible for the National Senior Certificate endorsement for higher education at bachelors degree level. Please refer to the University of Pretoria's 2010 admission requirements document pages 1 and 2 section 3.1 to 3.3:
