I would like to find out which Institutions in Cape Town offer courses whereby past matriculates can redo selected subjects? The individual whom I refer to, matriculated in 2007. The subjects that she would like to redo are; Physical Science, Maths, English (The applicant did English as a second language and has to do it at first language level). I would also like to find out what the minimum requirements are for studying civil engineering (what marks need to be achieved for the selected subjects) and do any of the institutions offer additional subjects that will help with credits when applying to study civil engineering. I want to become a engineer and have a choice between going with the N subject route and complete the GCC (government certificate of competency) or study the S subjects and complete my B-tech. I am struggling with the choice and have a few questions:
1. Is it true that you can qualify for the GCC with a B-tech?
2. Which qualification will make me more marketable?
3. Wont it save me time to just complete the GCC with the N route?
4. When will the N subjects be phased out and I heard the GCC is going to be phased out, is this true?
5. Which qualification carries more weight, GCC or M-tech? Click here for Lynn's reply.

I am currently in the Marketing sector specializing in trade and in need of a boost. I have had done NDP (non diploma studies) within the marketing field. I have also done various other vocational courses. Now that I am able to pay for my own studies, I would like to choose wisely. I’m a 33 year old married women with children and I reside in Cape Town. The problem is … I have 3 ideas:
1: Do a Bcom in Marketing – 3 year, I will grow within this field and maybe prosper financially. This is the logical move and in the direction of work that I am. But is this direction the path that I would like to take … answer .. I don’t know!
2: Do a BA (HUS) General with a M’s in Anthropology and Psychology…. WOW! It scares and excites me. These subject matters interest me ‘big-time’.
This is not a logical move, it does not seem to yield any future benefits but it could as we are not sure what future ‘employment’ structures will look like.
3: OR a BA (LAL) … this would be a field have been for 10 years now .. I do enjoy writing and creative writing … it will pay the bills, but does it yield any benefits for my future. This is just an exciting and I can once again see myself doing this in a business … there are many other benefits of this degree.
I have an end in mind: Me(aged 60) and hubby sitting in a very modest house close to the beach … writing a novel or something. Click here for Lynn's reply.

I have completed my BCom Degree in 2002 majoring in Information Technology and Business Management, My Subjects included Accounting I, Statistics I, Economics I, English Business Communication I, Auditing II, Business Management I, II, III, Information Technology I, II, III. In 2004 I completed a IT Engineering Skills Development (Programming) Learnership with ISETT SETA. My subjects were Business Management, Word Processing and Windows, A+, Microsoft Access, Visual Basic, Oracle & SQL Programming and Project Management. In 2004 I have looked for vacancies in IT and could not find any jobs, as I did not have the experience. I The college where I studied offered me a job in their finance department. I accepted and worked there for 4 years, here I worked with Petty Cash, Debtors, Creditors, Admin and my Directors Personal Assistant. During my stay there I embarked on studying part-time courses such as Pastel Accounting, Bookkeeping and Financial Accounting at Varsity College. I then looked for employment elsewhere; currently I am employed as an Accounting Clerk where my duties include Petty Cash and Debtors. My major duties include the Debtor Management, chasing, reconciliation, and following up on the debtors. My Concern with my career at the moment is that I am streamlining into one specific area of my career, which is the debtors, I don't enjoy what I am doing now as it is not challenging for me. I am in a position now to change my career to IT before my qualification becomes stagnant as I am already over qualified for the job that I am doing. The part that I enjoyed most during my studies was the Information Systems section. Is there an opportunity to develop into this career without experience in the field? Click here for Lynn's reply.

My daughter is in Grade 11 at the moment with the following subjects: English, Afrikaans, Maths, Computer Application Technology, Life Orientation and Graphic & Design. She wants to study at Tukkies (University of Pretoria) for BSc (Architecture) but I’m not sure if they will accept her due to the fact that they want 6 subjects on the NSC 20-credit list (excluding Life Orientation) but CAT is not part of that list. I’m currently 22 years of age. I failed HG maths in matric but passed all my other subjects on HG. I’m currently employed in a financial field and would like to study in the same field. I applied for BCom Financial Management but I’m sure I will not be accepted. So my question is this, is there any where I can do a mathematics program or equivalent qualification that will help me get accepted at UNISA for BCom Financial Management? All my studies will have to be part-time as I can not afford to be unemployed. Or am I now going to be stuck studying for something that only requires a Senior Certificate because I was lazy and ignorant back in matric? Click here for Lynn's reply.

I did my matric in 2007 and did not get an exemption. I'm currently doing electrical engineering N5, I found out that I can apply for a new matriculation certificate with full exemption by combining my N5 and Grade 12 subjects. I would like to know if this exemption will get me into universities such as Wits, UCT, UP. etc and is it on par with the exemption one would get with high school HG subjects? I am a grade 12 learner and I am writing to you as I would really love to study social work. It is my utmost passion to work with people and help uplift the community and all fellow South Africans. I lost my mother when I was 12 years and stayed at a children’s home where I interacted with girls from all different backgrounds each with their own story to tell and I learnt a lot. I have since moved in with my aunt and her family but still have regular contact with my social worker who has inspired me even more to give back and share what I have learnt and experienced. I would appreciate advice on how to go about applying for an application form for a bursary as I am in need of financial aid. Click here for Lynn's reply.

I would like to get involved in my Dad’s small trucking business when I have completed my matric. The business is still very small, so I wouldn’t require a diploma in Logistics and Warehousing. I simply want to start off doing a few short courses to get familiar with the industry. I am also on a tight budget and so I am considering doing the studies as correspondence courses. I need to learn about all the aspects of the trucking industry... Management, Vehicle Inspection, Hiring and Firing, Wages, Controller, Broking, Labour Laws etc … Click here for Lynn's reply.
