Fasset brand ambassador campaign
“Fasset’s Brand Ambassador Campaign is one of Fasset’s most important and exciting career guidance initiatives to date. By appointing Fasset brand ambassadors at FETs and university campuses across the country, Fasset will have a ‘physical presence’ at FET and university campuses,” says Fasset CEO, Cheryl James.
Most importantly, Fasset brand ambassadors will help to extend and deepen Fasset’s footprint and reach in rural and impoverished areas throughout the country. “Our brand ambassadors will play an important role in ensuring that Fasset is accessible to ‘ordinary South Africans,’ particularly those, living in rural areas and townships,” James explains.
Working in partnership with student platform, Student Village, Fasset (the Seta for Finance, Accounting, Management Consulting and Other Financial Services) will be recruiting and appointing nine well-connected, friendly, self-motivated students, to serve as Fasset brand ambassadors at nine Further Education and Training colleges (FETs) and university campuses around the country. Their appointment coincides with the start of the 2012 academic year.
In the initial phase, Fasset brand ambassadors will be appointed at the University of Fort Hare, East London; Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Port Elizabeth; University of Johannesburg (Soweto Campus); False Bay FET College, Western Cape; Northern Cape Urban College, Kimberly; Tshwane North FET College, Pretoria; and the Maluti FET College in Phutaditjhaba.
“Just as it is an ambassador’s role is to represent his or her country’s policies, in the country in which they are stationed, so it is the role of Fasset brand ambassadors to represent Fasset, the careers in the sector, its skills upliftment initiatives and offerings at the various campuses at which our brand ambassadors are based,” James informs.
Enrolled as students in accounting and finance-related disciplines, Fasset brand ambassadors will undergo a rigorous training programme, which will equip them with the requisite skills and knowledge to enable them to position the Finance, Accounting, Management Consulting and Other Financial Services (Fasset) sector as the sector of career choice for many young South Africans,” she reveals.
Deploying a range of strategies, including presentations and exhibitions, Fasset brand ambassadors will be encouraged to “think out of the box,” and devise strategies, which will strike a chord with millennials on campus, who are either already pursuing a career in accounting or finance-related fields, and may be interested in additionally obtaining a professional qualification, as well as those, who may be contemplating careers in finance or accounting.
The fact that Fasset brand ambassadors are students themselves, similarly aged, come from very similar backgrounds, share similar life experiences, values and preferred communication styles, will enable them to connect very easily with fellow students.
“This is a huge advantage when engaging with and informing current students, and those about to register, about Fasset learnerships and the myriad of exciting career options available within the Finance, Accounting, Management Consulting, and Other Financial Services sector, whether presenting, manning an exhibition stand, distributing Fasset career-related information, or sharing Fasset learner success stories,” James observes.
Fasset brand ambassadors will also disseminate information about Fasset-funded Development Projects, including Fasset-funded Work Readiness Programmes for graduates, which have enjoyed placement rates in excess of 80%.
James says it is important to recognise that Fasset brand ambassadors will have an impact far beyond their FET or university campus. “Appointed inter alia for their leadership and achievements to date, Fasset brand ambassadors will inevitably serve as role models within their own communities. Their influence and impact will extend far beyond their campus, into the townships and rural communities, in which they live. This is very important as Setas have a significant role to play in drawing the marginalised and marginalised youth into the mainstream economy,” James reminds.
Transformation remains one of the biggest challenges within the Fasset sector. “Our Fasset brand ambassador strategy is part of Fasset’s dedicated career guidance campaign to attract more black learners into the finance and accounting profession. Just as Fasset has achieved considerable success in implementing Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande’s vision, of making every workplace a learning space, we are very confident that through our Fasset Brand Ambassador Campaign, Fasset will succeed in drawing more and more students from rural areas and townships into mainstream careers within the Fasset sector,” James concludes.
