Train drivers operate both electronic or diesel trains carrying freight or passengers. It is the train drivers responsibility to inspect their trains, repairing minor problems and reporting major defects.
Train drivers are responsible for ensuring that safety regulations are followed and have to keep to strict timetables.
A train driver works for organisations like Metrorail, Rovos Rail or Shosholoza Meyl.
They rely on interpreting train signals and need litercy skills enabling them to interpret colour and signals that indicate speed limits and direction. Some modern trains use computers and digital information for navigation and safety. Working hours are defined by the trains schedules.
