Toxicology
Toxicologists study the potential adverse effects of chemicals, biological materials and radiation on living systems and the environment. They plan, carry out and interpret laboratory and field studies to identify toxins and evaluate their effect on the environment.
Toxicology research is conducted at educational institutions and there are some teaching opportunities. Analytical and clinical toxicology is carried out in hospitals.
What they do:
· isolate, identify and quantify toxic substances in biological materials
· plan and carry out laboratory experiments on animals and/or in vivo or in vitro systems, using bacteria or tissue culture
· they work with other scientists and technicians evaluating statistical data, risk analysis, and they write reports and literature surveys
· evaluate the safety of new chemicals in pharmaceutical products, toiletries, other consumer products, packaging and industrial chemicals
Chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and agrochemical companies involve toxicologists at all stages of product development either within their own facilities or through contract research organisations.
