Becoming a Sound Designer is becoming the artist who works alongside the director of a Movie or TV production to shape the overall consistent soundtrack that exploits the expressive possibilities of the sound medium.
The Sound Designer begins work by studying the script of a Film or TV production, gathers as much information as they can about any sound or music it calls for.
The over all sound design is organically related to the narrative and thematic needs of the film, and has an integrity not possible if sound is divided among an entire bureaucracy.
It is important, as with any design, that the sound designer meets with the Director early in production in order for them to understand the requirements and expectations of the Director.
Some directors will already have very clear ideas about what the sound effects and/or music should sound like, while others may request that the sound designer/composer sit in on rehearsals to assist with developing effects and music to fit the specific contexts in which they will be used.
Once they have a precise sense of what the production needs are of the music or sound, the composer begins composing the necessary musical pieces and the sound designer begins to gather and create the necessary sounds.
