Set Designer (Film Industry)
After studying the script and discussions with other crew, such as directors and designers set designers do research to determine fashion, architectural style and period, size, shape, weight, colour, materials used, cost, ease of use and safety for their designs.
Tasks include:
- Producing sketches (by hand or using computer-aided design (CAD) tools) and/ or scale models to guide the set builders in the construction of sets for:
o films
o stage shows
o television shows
o theatre productions
- then oversee the construction of the set
A set can be located on a sound stage, theatre stage or in an open lot.
Other tasks include:
- involvement in the design of costumes and visual aids (such as props) required in the production
- ensure that budgets are met
- ensure that the creative and technical requirements of the director or producer are carried out
- advise on other technicalities such as lighting, sound and special effects
Set designers can self-employed of work on a part-time or contractual basis.

Set building companies, exhibition display companies, film production houses, television studios, community projects, interior design houses, photographic studios
