Registered Nurse
Nurses play an important part in our community. They are trained to take care of sick people - and are often called in to help with emergencies. Becoming a Nurse involves helping others, working with people and being a part of the medical profession. The job is challenging and varied and has many areas of specialisation.
Nursing is a very responsible job. It takes dedication and a very special kind of person to be able to care for ill, injured, convalescing, or disabled patients.
Nursing duties include:
- Assessing patient health problems and needs
- Maintain accurate, detailed reports and records
- Developing and implementing nursing care plans
- Monitoring, recording and report ing symptoms and changes in patients' conditions.
- Record patients' medical information and vital signs.
- Consult and coordinate with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
- Monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet and physical activity.
- Prepare patients for, and assist with, examinations and treatments.
- Advising patients on health maintenance and disease prevention
- doing case management.
Nurses can work at various places of employment. Some are comfortable and hygienic and other could be less than ideal in rural and poverty-stricken areas or disaster areas.
Nurses can have many different responsibilities and areas of specialization, including being a:
- Floor Nurse (assists the Scrub Sister during surgery)
- Anesthetic Nurse (prepares the equipment and assists the Anethetist during surgery)
Nursing qualifications are accredited by the South African Nursing Council.
