Physicists study a wide range of physical phenomena in many branches of physics spanning from sub-atomic particles of which all ordinary matter is made (particle physics) to the behavior of the material Universe as a whole (cosmology).
Most physicists specialize in either theoretical or experimental research.
- Theoretical research deals with the development of new theories,
- Experimental research deals with the experimental testing of theories and the discovery of new phenomena.
Despite important discoveries during the last four centuries, there are a number of unsolved problems in physics, and many areas of active research.
