Photo-lithographers are responsible for all the photographic work in connection with the lithographic printing process. First, they arrange the photographic film in the processing camera. They have to know the factors that may influence the negative of the material to be printed, such as the set copy, line drawings and similar material. They develop the film, either manually or by means of a developing machine in a darkroom, to produce the negatives and positives used to imprint the lithographic plates for the actual printing process. They produce colour photographs using four negatives, which are developed separately and transposed onto metal plates that produce a four-colour picture. They also operate photo-composition machines.
