Petroleum geological technologists usually start as geologists, and then specialise as petroleum geological technologists. Their primary function is quality control in a refinery or lubricant manufacturing plant or in the field of petroleum product application and use. These products are obtained from crude oil by refining processes, and include liquid petroleum, gas, aviation, motor, diesel and furnace fuels, kerosene, solvents, lubricating oils, greases, waxes, bitumen and other special products.
