Does working on motor vehicles inspire you? Would repairing damaged vehicles make your day? Becoming a Panel Beater is one area of vehicle maintenance you could consider.
A Panel Beater repairs the body and frame of a vehicle that has been damaged.
They remove dents, straighten bent auto-bodies and replace crushed parts. The damaged parts are first aligned, then beaten and pulled into shape and lastly filled and sanded for smoothness.
Parts that canot be reached from the outside are reshaped using special techniques. Dents that cannot be taken out are filled up with a body filler and smoothed. Panels that have been stretched are heated and then hammered in a special way that has a shrinking effect on the metal.
If a part can't be fixed it is replaced with a new one (or sometimes a used part). They are responsible fo the final assembly and inspection for correct fit, as well as for all the fastening components.
Panel beating requires advanced welding skills as well as the ability to use tools like pneumatic hammers and metal-cutting equipment.
As a Panel Beater you could choose to work in a specialised field such as the restoration of classic cars, keeping vintage cars and automotive history alive.
Modern cars have complicated body designs and so the modern panel beater must always keep up to date with the latest techniques and specialised information on the many makes and models of vehicles.
The Panel Beater career is strenuous and can be frustrating but once the vehicle is restored you will find that there is also a lot of satisfaction. A skilled panel beater will always be in demand and can earn a very good income.
