Oceanographic technicians provide the technical and logistical support that is required to run research programmes efficiently.
They are responsible for the collection and processing of a wide range of data both at sea and on land.
In order to carry out the duties required of a oceanographic technician, they must be able to operate electronic equipment and computers, which are the basic tools of modern marine science.
Oceanographic technicians might even become involved in the design and development of oceanographic equipment as well as the writing of the related operating software.
A technician does not require the same level of academic training as a professional oceanographer, but does require specialized technical training.
