Musical instrument builders design, build and assemble musical instruments and instrument parts and also restore, repair, alter or adjust them. They usually specialise in certain families of musical instruments, such as electronic, stringed or brass instruments or an individual musical instrument.
They use techniques, such as wood carving, silver smithing and cabinet making and work with wood, metal or other materials.
Other tasks:
- They tune instruments, attach strings and install electrical wiring.
- They also consult with their customers, musicians, telling them more about the instrument and its acoustic properties.
- Musical instrument builders also discuss a client’s exact requirements to establish exactly what they client is looking for.
They work on a variety of instruments, operating inside music shops or repair ships to keep the pieces in tune and in proper condition.
