An Instrumental Performer, singer or composer in the classical music field performs or composes music for the enjoyment of an audience.
The music composed or performed by an instrumental performer can be recorded in a studio or performed live, either as a soloist or in a group of musicians.
It may involve working as a salaried member of a group or could be in the form of freelance work for several organisations. Musicians usually specialise in a particular type of music and are often employed on a sessional basis by orchestras.
This occupational profile is concerned only with the professional performance of classical music. General tasks may include: performing in concerts and participating in recording sessions; delivering educational work in schools, businesses and the wider community; practising regularly and networking.
Orchestral players' tasks specifically include: maintaining and setting up/tuning the instrument and arranging for its transportation, if large; preparing for rehearsals, rehearsing with the orchestra and responding to the conductor's directions; maintaining a diary either through a diary service or a personal diary.
Solo/chamber performers' tasks specifically include: organising concerts, with or without the help of an agent, including researching and writing programme notes; arranging rehearsals with an accompanist or ensemble; re-evaluating performances and thinking about the music, style, composer, repertoire, audience and venue whilst working towards an appropriate version of your performance; learning new pieces of music to extend your repertoire; handling the administration of business activities, such as organising publicity, negotiating fees, liasing with agents and managing diary services (if working freelance).
