Medical Laboratory Technologist
Medical laboratory technologists help doctors and pathologists to diagnose diseases by using various kinds of clinical laboratory tests.
The three main areas of work are diagnostics, research and the preparation of serums and vaccines. They do not work directly with patients but form part of a laboratory team, assisting a “professional officer” who has a degree.
Duties:
- may identify disease-causing organisms, parasites, fungi, viruses and cancer cells
- may do research and develop new laboratory techniques, while others teach at tertiary institutions
- train and supervise laboratory aides and other technologists

Hospitals, private pathologists, universities (medical and veterinary), research institutions, industrial firms, government departments, blood transfusion services
