In a large organization all other Directors and managers will report to him/her. These are the marketing, financial, human resources and operations Directors.
The Managing Director is like the captain of the ship. The "buck stops" with him and he reports to the shareholders and is usually a shareholder himself like Bill Gates.
It is important to note that this is a position that one aspires to and not one that comes without plenty of hardwork and dedication. The position of Managing Director is normally earned by someone who has worked their way through the ranks of the Company and who has already been in a managing position. ie. An accountant who has studied a BCom and passed his Board Exam has worked himself up into a Financial Management and possibly Financial Director position within a company. This person then has the opportunity to apply for a Managing Director position within either the current company or in some cases other companies who might be in search of a new MD.
