Make-up design work can include:
- Working long hours
- Travelling to film locations
- Selecting make-up to fit a specified brief
- Mixing oils, greases, and coloring to prepared grease paint for special color effects.
- Applying grease paint, liquid makeup, and powder to exposed areas of faces and bodies, using sponge, fingers, and powder puffs.
- Applying makeup to bodies of performers in color tone and texture to match facial cosmetics.
The make-up designer course is devised for those who wish to work in the field of television, film, theatrical and photographic make-up. It is also of great value for teachers of drama and dance. Make-up designers don’t only do stage make-up using conventional make-up and make-up skills, they are also trained to make artificial limbs, etc, from latex.
- an introduction (anatomy and physiology of the feet, hands and head including the skin, and make-up in some depth; putting on fashion shows, doing special effects, make-up for ramp mannequins and cabaret shows)
- basic make-up (day, evening and disco, etc)
- photographic, television, mannequin and competitive make-up (the use of specialised lightening, make-up for black and white, colour and nude photography, body painting, fantasia, glamour, fashion, bridal and special occasion make-up)
- film and stage make-up (character make-up such as ageing of the face, neck and hands, pantomime – witches, wizards, dwarfs, space age, animals, clown and monsters
- special effects which includes making and colouring bald caps from latex and plastic, piece moulding – noses, chins, bags under eyes, etc; sculpturing; taking impressions and making moulds; the use of hot latex and cold foams, colouring and making foam appliances; creation of whole foam faces; designing wounds, injuries and scars; use of theatrical blood; collodion and various materials used in film making; making beards, moustaches and eyebrows
