Limnologist
Studying the where for and what for of Fresh Water and Sea Water is the job of a Limnologist. Does this interest you? Read on.
Limnologist study the physical, chemical, meteorological and biological conditions in fresh water bodies such as lakes, ponds, rivers, streams and wetlands. Their studies include fresh and salt water.
They are concerned with water movements on all scales, from global circulation patterns to small-scale mixing.
Tasks include:
- determining where particular organisms occur in a certain body of water, where pollutants come from and where currents flow
- examining all aspects of the water to find out how much plankton there is in an area, how much heat is contained in the surface, how much oxygen is available in the water and how fast algae grow
They are also interested in the factors that affect the transmission of light through the water.
Limnologists are involved in the same studies as oceanographers, but they conduct their studies in inland systems only, which can contain both fresh and salt water.
Companies to work for:
Universities, government departments, industry, research laboratories, Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism
