Horse breeders breed and sell horses.
Horse breeders need to:
· Have a strong background in horse psychology to understand the development of a horse, its natural life-style, instincts, actions and reactions.
· Know how to deal with youngsters, stallions, highly-strung and problem horses.
· Have an understanding of horse physiology to understand the structures and locations of parts in a horse’s body as well as the ability to recognise good and bad conformation (structure or build).
· Have an understanding of the correct type of pasture required for the horses, as well as stabling and bedding.
Duties:
· Consist of overseeing the feeding and watering of horses, turning them out to pasture, the cleaning and washing out of the stables and watering buckets as well as general maintenance of the property.
· They also take care of all aspects of horse health such as taking temperatures, pulses and respiration, recognising minor ailments and treating them, giving injections and medication and treating horse parasites.
· They school, exercise and prepare them for competition, shows and travelling and ensure the correct diet and fitting, maintaining and cleaning of tack.
· Responsible for the correct nutrition, hoof and teeth care, grooming, tack and equipment maintenance, lunging and exercising horses, stable yard design and maintenance, equestrian disciplines (eg. Training riders and horses on show etiquette) as well as small business management functions.
Horse breeders need to have sound business knowledge, as they are constantly buying and selling horses, entering into negotiations and purchasing new blood lines for their breeding stables.
