Guide Dog Trainer
Guide dog trainers train dogs to guide people who are partially or completely blind. They guide dogs must be able to help and lead the blind person and keep them from harm. A blind person will usually get a guide dog when it is still a puppy and most of them will have the same guide dog for years. Guide dogs are extremely intelligent dogs and mostly come from the Labrador family.
What they do:
- Guide dog trainers choose a team of twelve-month old puppies, usually eight, for training. The pups are put through a training program and then assessed over a period of four to six months.
- The guide dog trainer then trains each dog to guide a visually impaired person, making the dog used to all kind of places and work or living situations and conditions.
- After training a guide dog, guide dog trainers need teach the blind person how to use the dog. The visually impaired person undergoes training with the particular guide dog that was chosen for him/her – this is to assist them in getting used to each other and to understand their different duties and responsibilities toward each other.
- Training may last for six weeks.
Guide dog trainers need to be physically healthy and strong, and free form leg, back, muscular, skeletal or foot disorders, because young dogs often get excited, especially when they just begin training, and may jump all over the trainee.
