Glassblower
Glassblowers shape glassware from gobs of molten (hot melted) glass; producing anything from unique tableware to scientific equipment. Glass dates back many years. It is believed that the first major breakthrough in glassware took place around 200BC, when air was blown into molten glass.
Glassblowers set a gob of glass on a charred woodblock and then begin to shape it. They blow into the glass with a blowpipe, while perfecting the final shape and contour of each piece. Some glassblowers shape and attach hot glass to other objects, forming pedestals and handles. Glassblowers usually require more intense training than regular glass manufacturing workers.
Many new types of glass, such as laminated glass, heat-resistant glass and glass fabrics have been developed.
