Geotechnician
Geotechnicians study and research the geosphere of the earth, and conduct geomorphological analysis and assessments with other experts, in order to determine:
- subterranean conditions to find certain minerals and underground water reservoirs
- and to evaluate the suitability of a site for large-scale construction
At times, geotechnicians work closely with environmental health officers in evaluating underground water pollution. Geotechnicians usually work in the fields of geohydrology, mining and exploration geology, geophysics or engineering geology.
- geohydrology entails the research and analysis of geophysical conditions on water resources
- mining and exploration geology refers to the assessment of potentially hazardous underground geophysical conditions and for locating natural mineral resources
- geophysics is the process of evaluating the condition of the earth’s subsurface by using sophisticated equipment
- engineering geology includes the gathering of information on conditions within the subsurface and the location of building material for large construction projects
Companies to work for:
Mining houses, government, Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, construction companies, research institutes
