Geomorphologist
Geomorphologists study land surface and landforms to determine where they originated from and how old they are.
What they do:
- explore, collect and study samples of rock surfaces, fossils and rock strata
- study the effects of erosion, glaciers, earthquakes, volcanoes and sedimentation on landforms and on the lands’ surface
- conduct surveys on gravity and ground magnetism to advise on extracting resources, construction of bridges, roads and tunnels at specific sites
- examine geological samples, compile data reports and prepare geological maps
- prepare geological models to explain the process of future developments of land forms and land surfaces
Where to study:
Universities: UJ, NMMU, SUN, RU
Companies to work for:
Mining groups, government departments, geological survey companies, Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, museums, civil engineering firms, educational institutions, consulting companies
