Fire Fighters protect life and property from fire and also attempt to prevent the outbreak of fires.
They assist at disasters such as earthquakes, train derailments, vehicle accidents, floods, mudslides, forest fires etc. Saving the lives of those caught in a burning building or car is their first priority.
The procedures for extinguishing fires or for handling disasters such as car accidents are mostly planned and practised beforehand. However, the firemen still have to decide, when they arrive on the scene, on suitable techniques – for instance, whether to use water hoses, foam or chemicals to extinguish the fire.
Fire Fighters also carry out routine tasks such as cleaning fire engines, polishing equipment and working I the radio room. They attend school functions and do presentations on fire safety.
Airport Fire Fighters are responsible for preventing fires in aircraft and buildings in the proximity of the airport. They also need to be on standby when aircraft are preparing for departure and arrival.
