Fashion Designers work on the design of an outfit or a whole clothing range. This includes both the look and what type of fabrics will be used.
In fashion design the look and ideas are always changing so the designer has to keep up with the latest trends.
Some may focus completely on a specialist area, such as designer wear, sportswear, childrens wear or accessories [hat, handbags and shoes]
They study the latest fashion trends in the country and around the world and then come up with designs that appeals to us [the consumer] and want to buy.
There are various styles of design such as Haute couture - this is the design and making of very special garments that show of the designer's creative talent and how they [and the businesses they work for] see the future of fashion design for the next fashion season.
Here the fashion designer can become very famous - a celebrity, a trendsetter - and then other famous people will want to wear their designs.
Most Fashion Designers will work for businesses that produce the kind of clothes we find in the clothing stores and boutiques. Here, there will be more limits to what you do or how you design but it is still a great challenge to come up with designs that will appeal to our market and it is a thrill to see people wearing clothes you have designed.
In South Africa many young Fashion Designers go out on their own or form small groups. This can be risky in the beginning but a good designer will always find people who will bye from them.
Designers get ideas from styles by scanning trade publications, visiting stores and travelling and observing lifestyles.
They develop and record their ideas by making sketches, draping dummies or making their designs and then prepare samples, or model garments, which are checked carefully for appearance, fit and qualitiy of work. If accepted the samples are included in their lines and presented to sales personnel or private clients. Many fashion designers run their own businesses.
