Becoming a Dancer is a life on the stage performing dances as entertainment for audiences. Dancers may also be expected to sing or act during performances.
Becoming a dancer entails some hard training and needs dedication and hard work. Dancers are expected to:
- Train, exercise, and attend dance classes to maintain high levels of technical proficiency, physical ability, and physical fitness.
- Study and practice dance moves required in roles daily.
- Harmonize body movements to the rhythm of musical accompaniment.
- Perform classical, modern, or acrobatic dances in productions which express storylines using their bodies as the only tool.
- Collaborate with choreographers in order to refine or modify dance steps.
- Coordinate dancing with that of partners or dance ensembles.
- Attend costume fittings, photography sessions, and makeup calls associated with dance performances.
- Audition for dance roles or for membership in dance companies.
- Develop self-understanding of physical capabilities and limitations, and choose dance styles accordingly.
- Monitor the field of dance to remain aware of current trends and innovations.
There are opportunities to study Dance at Ballet Schools or Schools for Dance and Movement. However, some dancers would have begun their dancing careers during their younger days and continue into adulthood with in-house training.
