Crane and Tower operators operate a large number of different types of cranes to lift and move materials, machines, or products in many directions.
They are an important part of any large building site and a growing economy. We see many crane operators at sites where new football stadiums are being built or new factories, schools, hospitals, offices, shopping centres and high-rise housing.
It is important for Crane and Tower operators to be able to
- know how much to load at a time and to prevent overloading
- Move levers, foot pedals and turn dials to control and operate cranes, cherry pickers, electromagnets and/or other moving equipment for lifting, moving, and placing loads.
- Inspect all crane equipment for wear and tear and to repair or replace parts when necessary.
- Clean, lubricate, and maintain the parts of a crane.
Crane and Tower operators will usually be trained on-the-job by experienced crane operators working at their employer.
Crane operators can also work at the harbours loading and off-loading ships and cargo trains, at container bays and storage places and on dredgers and at open-cast mines.
