Computer Engineers are involved in the design, installation, repair and service of computers and other hardware equipment. These are your nuts-and-bolts guys who get involved with the physical hardware.
A career in Engineering can start from a junior support position where the engineer is responsible for theperformance of a whole system and a large staff of junior engineers.
Computer engineering combines the fields of Information and Communication Technology. Computer engineers use systems engineering to design, implement, install, test, repair and serivce computers and computer systems for companies and government departments.
Computer engineers combine many technologies such as telecommunications, computer systems, and software engineering to create data, voice and image network communication systems. They also design, construct and monitor the development of computer systems for consumer products and manufacturing equipment, e.g. video cameras, hi-fi systems, washing machines, cellular phones, vehicle control systems and manufacturing robots.
It is important for a computer engineer to have a sound knowledge of designing and operating hardware components. They can also develop software and implement systems on many operating systems. They have a good knowledge of the Internet, teletraffic engineering, signal processing and data security. Senior compute engineers may supervise and assist teams of hardware engineers, prepare project proposals, or identify design areas which can potentially be patented and carry out patent searches to check for possible patent infringements.
