Coastal Geologist
Coastal geologists study the structure and composition of coastal regions in order to understand the physical, chemical and biological evolution of a coastline.
What they do:
· They collect samples by drilling and then examine their physical and chemical properties. This research is carried out in laboratories, and once they have examined the samples they need to write reports on their findings.
· Study coastal and inlet structures, analyse storm and hazardous material damage, access erosion damage, consult on restoring beaches, conduct environmental surveys and advise on controlling pollution.
· Conduct underwater sledge surveys and fathometer (instrument used to measure sonic depth) surveys to assess coastal water depth. As well as to prepare bathymetric charts (instrument used to measure the depth and contours of an ocean). These charts are integrated into the GPS (Global Positioning System), and the information becomes available immediately.
· Conduct aerial photographic surveys of beaches and their surrounding areas to record the coastal changes over time.
· May also teach or lecture at educational institutions.
