The Civil Engineer manages the plant and the manpower ensuring that the project they are busy with is completed within budget and on time.
They must also solve problems such as pollution, traffic congestion, energy needs, water supplies and provision of infrastructure for community settlements.
Civil Engineers are employed by government departments, provincial authorities, municipalities, construction companies, engineering and architectural companies, technikons and universities. Employers include the CSIR, SABS, Eskom, Iscor and Sasol. Some civil engineers work in private practice as independent consultants.
