Child and Youth Care Workers counsel young children and teenagers who have been subjected to neglect and various forms of abuse (emotiuonal, physical, sexual). These young people could come from dysfunctional homes.
Youth Workers not only work with children but entire families. They need to support the family and work through the problems that might arise because of the family environment.
Youth Workers need to educate and rehabilitate the youths in order for them to cope with their circumstances and how they can live normal lives thorugh establishing one-to-one relationships with the counsellor.
This work is normally done in conjunction with a team of psychologists, social workers, teachers, foster care workers and recreational therapists.
The working environment is varied as locations change from schools to psychiatric hospitals and even correctional institutes or private homes.
